Custom Made Glass Doors for Stacked Stone Fireplace - Project #10004

This is a beautiful ledger stone fireplace with a hand hewn rustic looking mantel. Fireplaces like yours look best when the glass doors are installed inside the opening and the gap between the stones is filled with mortar. Although it is possible to install a premade stock size door, we do not recommend doing so because there will be unsightly gaps all around the opening and smoke is likely to come through them and darken the stone. Plus, you won't get a very good seal on the fireplace and cold air will still continue to come into the home. It is more costly to have doors custom made, but the finished look and added functionality are well worth it.

Fireplace opening size: To measure this fireplace, you will need to find the narrowest and widest widths between the stones by measuring between each stone. Same for the height. We will also need the measurement from the hearth to the bottom of the lintel.

Recommended frame size: Once we get the measurements, we will recommend making the door 1/4" to 1/2" less on the top and sides than the narrowest width depending on how much variance there is.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
