Custom Glass Doors for Flat Stone Fireplace - Project #10005

This is an example of a well built slate stone fireplace front. With most stone fireplaces we would suggest an inside fit with a mortar joint. However, in this case the stones appear to be flat enough such that an overlap fit may also be appropriate, so we have created examples of both applications. The inside fit is more difficult to install but gives seems to better flatter the stone as you can recess the door a but to reveal the stone thickness. The outside fit will hide the cut edge of the stone if you do not want to see it, plus it better preserves the size of the fireplace opening. The request was to see how the Design Specialties Carolina Door with the Window Pane option would look in a black finish. We also created a mock up of the new Blackrock door because it is so popular and we wanted to show how it would look.

Fireplace opening size: Approximately 36" W x 26" H.

Recommended frame size: We recommend overlapping the stones by 1" on the top and each side, so the overall frame dimension would be 2" wider and 1" taller than the opening once we get the exact measurements.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
