Glass Doors for Beautiful Ledge Stone Fireplace - Project #10011

Here is a beautifully constructed ledger stone fireplace. The stone on this fireplace is flat enough to do an overlap fit or an inside fit. If you want a very narrow frame, you will need a frame with a very narrow profile like the two examples below so that we do not shrink the size of the opening much. To do an inside fit, we would leave about a 1/4" to 1/2" gap on the top and each side depending on how irregular the opening actually is. The gap would then need to be filled with mortar (Option #1 & #2). If you do not want to mortar the door in and prefer an outside fit, you will need a frame that is about 2" wide to help cover the irregularities in the stone. The narrower frames will not overlap enough to cover the gaps between the frame and the stone. We have several examples below to help give you an idea of how either application might look.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
