Our Comments: We have provided several examples of simple doors that are popular on ledger stone. The Stiletto is made of aluminum and is less expensive. The Legend is laser cut from 3/16" solid steel and is more heavy duty. The Madrid is far from what you asked for, but it seems to be very popular on fireplaces like yours, so we included it. THe Madrid is hand forged steel. We would make any of these doors with a 1/4" gap around the top and each side to fit inside the opening comfortably. The gap would then be filled with mortar. As far as the depth, each of these doors has a subframe that extends back into the opening about 1 1/2". This will make it easier to apply the mortar and adds to the stability/rigidity of the door frame.
