Glass Door for Stacked Stone Fireplace - Project #10351

Customer Comments: Hello - I'm interested in glass doors for my fireplace. Photos are below. It was built in 1956 with the house. We purchased the home one year ago. I am looking to increase the efficiency by controlling air flow to burn a longer fire. I have an excellent draft and burn a very hot fire but have to feed it every two hours or so. I also like the idea of being able to close the doors and "seal" the draft when not in use. We don't burn a daily fire just as a supplement when it gets extra cold and for ambiance, etc. The opening measurements are 33" horizontal and 29" from the hearth extension to the steel lintel. I'd be interested in the stock Savannah door in Vintage Iron with a mesh curtain if a stock door would fit (36x31.5?). If not I like the Savannah or the Phoenix in the custom selections.

Our Comments: It looks like the Stock size Savannah door model SA-40315 might fit, but it is very close, actually right at the limit. So if your fireplace is 28 15/16" to the lintel, it will not go in under the lintel unless the lintel is more than 7/8" back from the face of the stone. The door has a sub-frame that is 29" tall and recesses 7/8" into the fireplace, hence the fit limitation. So you will need to double check this. If we were to custom make the door, we would make it 36" W x 31" tall instead of 31 1/2" just to ensure a good fit. I have created mock-ups of both doors for you.

Aluminum Doors

These doors are pieced together from anodized aluminum extrusions. This material is less expensive than steel or sold brass, yet the finish holds up well to heat. These are the most affordable good quality custom doors.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
