Customer Comments: Good morning, I have just found your website and I'm in need of some assistance in trying to find a fireplace door for my current remodel. We have a masonry fireplace with large pieces of flat stone that we wanted to cover. Our contractor used steel studs and built out the front covering with hardy backer. We are interested in using stack stone but realize that an overlapping door might not look right based on the fact that the stack stone can be different thicknesses. I was wondering if I could use an inside mount door and then have the stack stone either stop at the opening or return to the face of the door. Another possibility would be an overlapping door with a wide lip so that stack stone could butt up to it. I will include pics of the fireplace but the rough opening is width=36, height=30.5 inches. I’m interested in a Matte black 2 door fireplace. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Our Comments: We have created mockups showing 3 different ways this project can be handled. We took the liberty of adding some stacked stone and wood flooring to give the mockups a more finished look.
Fireplace Opening: 36" W x 30 1/2" H
Option #: Brookfield Twin Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black. This option shows how it might look if the doors were installed overlapping the opening.
Option #: Legend Twin Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black. This option shows an inside fit with a frame wide enough to cover the exposed inner hearth that is raised.
Option #: Legend Twin Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black. This option shows an inside fit with stacked stone covering the face of the inner hearth, so the door frame would just overlap the hearth bricks slightly and the stone needed to cover the bricks would be installed afterwards.
Option #: Craftsman Fireplace Glass Door in Forged Iron. This door is made just like the above option, but is a bit more sophisticated in the look. We also show it with bifolding doors, but it can be made as twin doors.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
