Customer Comments: Hello. I'm looking for a screen to perfectly fit the opening of this fireplace. The opening is 48 inches wide at the base, but this is not a perfect semi circle. The dimensions all the way around would be custom. Thoughts? Could I trace a template for you?
Our Comments: We have 3 basic suggestions for your type of fireplace: A free standing screen, an attached screen with mesh doors, an attached screen with glass doors and mesh doors. Here are some examples.
Fireplace Opening: 48" W x ?" H
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Take a piece of heavy translucent plastic sheeting or mylar and cut it roughly a little bigger than the arched opening. Leave enough space so you can tape it securely to the bricks as shown in the picture below. Be sure the bottom edge of the plastic is perfectly even with the hearth, not folded over or crooked. Trace the opening accurately using a fine tip marker including each brick and the mortar joints. Mark the template as outside looking in. Once you have traced the opening, take a picture of the template while it is still in place so we can see how it was made. Take it down and carefully remove the tape and then roll it up and send it to us in a shipping tube. We'll tell you where to send it.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
