Glass Doors for In-The-Wall Stacked Stone Fireplace - Project #11030

Customer Comments: We are looking at your standard door options (bungalow or savannah). Fireplace opening is 40" wide and 30 3/4" high.

Our Comments: The stock Bungalow and Savannah doors are designed to sit on a hearth, not for installation on a fireplace raised in the wall like yours. Although they can be attached, the frame cannot overlap the bottom of the opening, so they look a little out of sorts as if they are floating and something is missing. Normally we would design a door with a 4-sided frame that overlaps the bottom or a door that fits inside the fireplace. Keep in mind that your stone is not flat, so a door made to fit on the outside will have noticeable gaps between the frame and the stones. When doors are made to fit inside, those gaps can be filled with mortar and it looks very clean and finished.

Stock Aluminum Doors

These doors are made to sit flat on a hearth. You can install them on a raised opening, but there is no frame at the bottom to overlap so they look a little odd. They are a lot less expensive, so the choice becomes more about the budget than the look.

Low End Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium Range Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

High End Hand Crafted Wrought Iron/Steel Doors

Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.

High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass

These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.

Hybrid-2
Hybrid 2 Fireplace Door Option #7: HYBRID-2 Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Satin Nickel with Mesh Curtains. This door has no frame on the sides, so it fits inside without the need for mortar. The position of the lintel plays a role as to whether or not this door can be installed on the fireplace.
EDGE HHFL
Edge Hidden Hinge Folding Door Option #8: EDGE-HH-FL Edge Hidden Hinge Folding Door in Oil Rubbed Steel with Mesh Curtains. This door has an angle iron frame on all 4 sides where all you see is the edge of the angle iron around the opening. Very solid clean simple look. Shown with mortar on all 4 sides. This is our favorite door for this type of application.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
