Custom Glass Doors for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #11188

Customer Comments: Hi - I would like to get more info on putting glass doors on my outdoor fireplace. Attached are pictures of my custom built fireplace. Looking for black powdercoat aluminum frame. Nothing fancy. Just want some doors to close when the wind shifts and to keep the smoke out of the mancave. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Our Comments: Design Specialties makes doors for outdoor fireplaces that can be burned with the doors closed. The aluminum doors can only be made with two doors since their bifold doors do not have hinges that can withstand the elements. If you want bifolding doors that fold out flat to the wall, you will need to use the Legend door that is made entirely from stainless steel (painted black). Below are mockups of the two options. It appears that the keystone projects out further than the rest of the surround, which means the doors will need to fit inside the opening. We would make the frame smaller than the opening on the top and sides by the width of the mortar joints. You would then fill the gaps with mortar as shown.

Affordable Aluminum Doors for Outdoor Fireplaces

Aluminum doors from Design Specialties are great for outdoor fireplaces but must be made as cabinet doors, so they do swing out twice as wide as a bifold door.

Stainless Steel Doors for Outdoor Fireplaces

Stainless steel comes at a substantially higher cost than aluminum. It is the most durable material of the two and can be made with bifolding doors.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
