Screens for Fireplace with Andirons - Project #11196

Our Comments: Glass doors were originally requested for this project. Because the andiron shanks will not allow the andirons to fit completely inside the fireplace, most glass doors will not work since the glass is relatively even with the front of the opening. There are some very high end glass doors that have unique frame materials that stand away from the fireplace up to 2", which will allow the andirons to work. Other options we recommend would include 3-fold screens or single panel screens with custom andiron cutouts. Here are some examples.

High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass Glass Doors

These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass and are available in a hand polished finish that is similar to the andirons. Doors like these are very expensive and can be made with a solid brass crown molding or split tube. We have chosen to illustrate the split tube. This door is made from a solid brass tube cut to the necessary depth to allow for the andirons.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
