Our Comments: We have created a variety of mockups to help you choose the type of screen you might prefer. There are many options for each of these types of screens that we can explore further once you determine the type you prefer.
Fireplace Opening: 48" W x 48" H
Before:
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Design Specialties Brookfield Fireplace Glass Door in Natural Iron with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Option #2: Design Specialties Legend Fireplace Glass Door in Forged Iron with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Industrial Age 3 Cabinet Fireplace Wire Mesh Door with Charcoal Frame and Hammered Texture Doors in Champagne.
Option #4: Design Specialties Craftsman Fireplace Glass Door in Antique Iron with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.
Option #5: Stone Manufacturing DF1G Bifold Glass Door in Pewter with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. Requires Fixed End Panels in This Size. Made from Nickel Plated Steel. Can also be made from Nickel Plated Solid Brass.
Option #6: Stone Manufacturing HYBRID-2 Bifold Solid Brass Fireplace Glass Door in Oil Rubbed Steel with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. This door has no frame on the sides.
Option #7: Stone Manufacturing 1P30M Single Panel Screen in Matte Black with Heavy Gauge Mesh, Angle Feet and Square Handles.
Option #8: Stone Manufacturing 1P33M Solid Brass Fireplace Screen with Rope Casting Trim in Black Antique Silver with Heavy Gauge Mesh, Queen Anne Handles and Feet.
Option #9: Stone Manufacturing AR-SA9 Fireplace Screen with Inner Panel, Contemporary Handles and Feet. Can be made in Steel (Pewter) or Solid Brass (Satin Nickel).
Option #10: Stone Manufacturing 1P30M Crafts Bowed Screen in Oil Rubbed Steel with Polished Brass Accents with Heavy Gauge Mesh.
Option #11: Stone Manufacturing CFR85 Frame Screen with 1/2" Center Trim in Smooth Oil Rubbed Steel with WI-AN3 Art Nouveau Andirons.
These are baked enamel finishes, so they are all heat resistant. These are all Group 1 finishes, which are same price group as flat black.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
