Customer Comments: Good Morning! We need help selecting a door for our new fireplace. As you can see from the pictures, the house leans toward transitional with some California costal accents. Our thought was a simple black frame with 2 glass doors versus the 4 door "accordion" look. The opening is 50" wide by 30" tall, but please note the "lip" at the bottom that I suppose was designed to hold ashes in? Please let me know if you have questions.
Our Comments: Only certain types of doors can be installed on this Superior 50" Traditional Fireplace. If you wish to have cabinet doors, you cannot burn a fire with the doors closed due to the large size of the two glass panes. We have provided one example of a door that can be burned closed with a very modern bifold system.
Fireplace Opening: 50" W x 30" H
These can be made in cabinet style doors but must be burned with the doors open. Doors do not necessarily open a full 180 degrees depending on the model.
These can be burned with the doors closed, but must have bifold doors. These doors can open 180 degrees flat to the fireplace if installed flush with the facing.
The sliding door from Stone Mfg features a 2" wide plain frame made from your choice of steel or solid brass (painted black). The left and right glass panes are fixed while the center panes slide left and right to open. This door is recommended for gas fires as it is not as practical for burning wood.
W1: Smallest width between the stones
W2: Smallest width between the firebricks inside
H1: Smallest height between the stones
H2: Smallest height from the top black metal to the bottom stones (I cannot tell from the picture of the black metal is flush at the top. If it is, that measurement should be the same as H2)
H3: Tallest height at the bottom from the stones to the top edge of the row of bricks
We will make the outer frame 1/8" smaller than the smallest stone opening (W1 x H1) and make the frame at the bottom wide enough to cover H3 and have the subframe clear those bricks by 1/4".
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
