Customer Comments: I have recently completed the renovation of a large stone home in the Virginia Piedmont. The home was built in the 1930s and the renovation has maintained and enhanced the traditional design elements and materials used when it was first constructed. There are a total of seven fireplaces that will require screens and I have selected the non-typical stone surround raised hearth to get started. All fireplaces except for the dining room have gas starters installed, they will all be wood burning only. Thanks for your assistance.
Our Comments: Here are examples of doors we recommend for this application. We are showing all of the options as overlap fitting doors, although they can be made to fit inside, in which case you will need to fill the gaps around the frame with mortar. Overlapping the stone may require a slightly wider frame than shown in some of the mockups to cover the irregularities. Option #1 and Option #4 are the doors you provided as examples.

These doors from Stone Manufacturing are in fact hand forged by a real Blacksmith, so the texture and finish are authentic. They are very high end coming in at double or triple the price of the steel doors shown lower on the page ($6500-$8500 price range).
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans at Stone Manufacturing from Solid Copper. Although solid copper was not uncommon in the early 20th century for fireplace screens, Stone Mfg. is one of the only manufacturers capable of making doors from this material today. These doors are also available made from solid brass in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and unique high quality finishes ($6000 + price range).
These steel doors are more affordable because they are laser cut or pieced together from flat bar stock. Hammered details are done by machine rather than by hand to keep the cost to a minimum. They are rugged and well crafted with design elements that fit the 1930s blacksmith style, but are not forged by a blacksmith ($3000 to $4800 price range).
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
