Screens for Very Large Fireplace - Project #11459

Customer Comments: Can you provide me with a quote on both a freestanding plain mesh screen and a curtain screen for my fireplace. 71" wide at the bottom and 70.5" wide at the top, 46 high to the hearth.

Our Comments: Mesh curtains for mesh doors are best for a fireplace this large. A free standing screen will have to be moved and set on the floor when tending a fire, so they will be combersome and inconvenient given the limited floor space around the fireplace. Regardless, we have provided examples of each of these options. Andirons are highly recommended for this application as they are a fundamental component of fireplace design. We also recommend a custom made grate to better fit the space.

Curtain Screens

Mesh curtains provide easy access to the fire with decent spark protection. Fireplaces this large require a special "I-Beam" track with rollers that prevents sagging. These can be made with a top bar, top and bottom bar, 3 sided or 4 sided frame. Having a bar across the bottom helps prevent logs from rolling out of the fireplace. It also allows you to add a pet deterrent channel that keeps pets and small children from pushing the mesh inwards.

Screen Doors

Screen doors are the ultimate choice for a large fireplace as they are very convenient and offer the best spark protection. Doors this large require fixed end panels to reduce the size of the individual doors that open so they are manageable.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
