Customer Comments: My fireplace opening size is 40x24.5. I would like to have a door that can be closed while the fire is on. I like Design Specialties Savannah for style, but it doesn't seem like any of the standard sizes work for that size. The closest I see is 40 x 25 1/2. or 44x27 1/2 (this probably looks too big). What are my options here?
Subsequent Comments: Hi Greg, Here are the pictures of the fireplace. My biggest issue is that the fireplace is a see-through one and it gets pretty smoky whenever I run it. I've tried dry wood, open windows, turn off HVAC, and etc. It already has a door in the back. When I run it with the door closed on the back then the smoky gets drawn toward the door and comes out to make that side smoky. When I run with both side open, I don't get enough draw to keep both sides non-smoky. I'm thinking that if I run with both sides semi closed, to closed (with vent at the bottom), it may solve my problem. Let me know what you think and if there is a door I can use. Thanks.
Our Comments: The Savannah does not come in a standard size that will fit your fireplace, but it can be custom made at a higher price. I have created mockups showing other standard size doors that can work, but are not ideal. I also included a couple custom made doors so you can compare. Ideally, you would want to have a door that overlaps the opening at lest 1" and use insulation on the back side of the frame to help prevent smoke from coming in throught the mortar joints. The standard size doors that only overalp 1/2" will not hold the insulation well and will not provide a very good seal. I have included an analysis of the fit for each of the doors, so hopefully you will find this helpful.

Standard size doors are less expensive and ship faster than custom doors. They are assembled to order from precut pieces and then finished, so there are more finish options than doors doors that are already premade and in stock. Stock doors are on the shelf ready to ship within 2 business days and have no options.
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
