Screens for Small Victorian Fireplace - Project #11605

Customer Comments: Hi, I have an irregularly shaped fireplace that needs a protective screen. As you can see in the attached photos, there are two openings (one roughly 16" wide by 27" high covering the opening of the fireplace and the other 19.5" wide by 28.5" high covering the area inside of the surrounding brass poles) that could be covered, ideally with a screen that allows easy access to the inside. Can you suggest some options?

Our Comments: We recommend either a single panel free standing screen, an attached screen door or glass door. Here are some examples.

Fireplace Opening: 16" W x 27" H

Attached Doors

We can make a single wire mesh door or glass door with wire mesh doors behind the glass. These are attached to the fireplace using long "L" brackets that are attached to the bricks inside behind the metal front.

Sliding Mesh Curtains

This mesh curtain screen has a frame that is held in place with "L" brackets that are attached to the firebrick inside the fireplace. There is a Pet Deterrent Channel that prevents the mesh from being pushed in by your cats and also prevents the mesh from being pushed out if a log rolls off the grate.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
