Customer Comments: We are looking for a black, Steel or aluminum with the smallest overlay as possible. There are slight imperfections that I believe will prevent one from going inside, but we don’t want to cover up the tile. Bifold glass. Mesh doors. Thanks!
Our Comments: Here are some doors that will have narrow frames with minimal overlap on your beautiful tile fireplace.
Fireplace Opening: 38 1/2" W x 26" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Profile 4 Fireplace Glass Door in Hail Navy (navy blue) with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. This can also be black. Doors must be burned open. We just had to show this door because the color is unique and most people are not aware that a door in Navy Blue is available.
Option #2: Design Specialties Stiletto Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. This door is almost identical to Option #1, but it is 1 5/8" deep, so it stands out from the fireplace a bit more. Can be burned with doors closed.
Option #3: Design Specialties Brookfield Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Can be burned with doors closed.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Option #4: Design Specialties Legend Fireplace Glass Door with Special 1 1/4" Wide Frame, Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Can be burned with doors closed.
Option #5: Design Specialties Carolina Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with 1 1/2" Frame, Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Can be burned with doors closed.
These doors are designed to fit inside the opening, made with minimal frames on top and bottom only with no frame on the sides. They cannot be made with mesh backup doors, but can have mesh curtains behind the glass.
Option #6: Stone Manufacturing HYBRID-2 Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Flat Black with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. Must be burned with the doors open.
Option #7: Stone Manufacturing Minimal-1 Fireplace Cabinet Glass Door in Flat Black with Clear Glass and Mesh Curtains. This is a cabinet door with 3/8" thick glass for a very high end unique look. Must be burned with the doors open.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.

Photo #2: With your back to the fireplace, take a picture looking straight out into the room so we can see the decor directly in front of the fireplace.
