Glass Options for Large See Through Outdoor Fireplace - Project #11638

Customer Comments: Terry, Please see the following images attached. Can your team produce an 85"x29.5" ceramic glass window for this fireplace? This would need to be single pane. Please advise, thank you!

Our Comments: We cannot provide a single pane of ceramic glass that large. Ceramic glass is very brittle and not made in sizes this large with a thickness that is appropriate for this application. We never recommend enclosing one side of a see through fireplace with glass in any case, particularly with an outdoor fireplace where thermal shock can shatter glass. You can read more about that on our site here: Glass Doors for See Through Fireplaces.

With that said, we can provide some options to seal off the one side even though we do not recommend it. Please see the examples below along with our recommendations and comments for each possibility. Each of these is made using a 2" wide stainless steel frame with a flat black powder coat finish.

Fireplace Opening (approximate): 84" W x 28" H

Legend Fireplace Door Option #1: Hearth Creations Single Panel 1/4" Tempered Glass. This can only be a viable option if this is a gas burning fireplace and the other side of the fireplace is open when the gas is burned. It will not be safe if there are glass doors on the other side and someone closed the glass doors with the fire burning. Although we can provide this as described, we do not recommend it, particularly in an outdoor application where tempered glass may not be able to handle the thermal shock in cold climates.

Legend Fireplace Door Option #2: Hearth Creations Framed Ceramic Glass with Double Split Glass Panes. Each pane would be about 41" wide. This reduces the size of the ceramic panes to a size that can work. The ceramic glass in these sizes would be able to handle thermal shock better than a single pane of tempered glass. Installers would need to be very careful that they do not twist the frame at all when installing as ceramic glass is easy to break when twisting. Although we can provide this, we do not highly recommend it, but believe it is a better alternative than a single pane of tempered glass.
Legend
Legend Fireplace Door Option #3: Hearth Creations Framed Ceramic Glass with Triple Split Glass Panes. The center pane would be 42" wide with 18" sides. This has the same characteristics and recommendations as Option #2 but provides a better view of the fire.
Legend
Legend Fireplace Door Option #4: Design Specialties Stainless Steel Legend Glass Door with Clear Tempered Glass. We highly recommend this option as you can burn it with the doors open or closed.
Legend
Legend Fireplace Door Option #5: Hearth Creations Flat Stainless Steel Fully Framed Bifold Door with Ceramic Glass. This is our highest recommended option as you can burn this with the doors open or closed and have the least worries about thermal shock in cold weather. NOTE: Ceramic glass cannot have clean edges, hence the reason each pane must be fully framed.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
