Screens for Modern White Brick Fireplace - Project #11645

Customer Comments: Hello HW, I am interested in a fireplace screen. I am considering a custom screen. Below are some details. I would greatly appreciate your advice and ideas. I am not sure what screen will work best for me and my wife. I am not sure if we want the screen to have a door, or handles and just move the screen to the side when loading the fireplace. The screen would be so small that presumably it would be lightweight and not bulky. There is a flue handle just above the opening that operates over 360 degrees. When the flue handle rotates it is just above the height of the opening. We are not set on the finish but thinking along the lines of rustic/vintage/natural black or silver/chrome.

Our Comments: Here are a few mockups of screens and glass doors for you to consider.

Glass Doors

Glass doors are the most functional and convenient type of fireplace screen. With mesh curtains or mesh doors behind the glass, you can open the doors when you have a fire and close them as the fire is dying out to keep the heat in and cold air out.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
