Customer Comments: Hi, Glad we stumbled across your website. Looking forward to see what you come up with. Our fieldstone fireplace opening is 44" across and 34.5" tall. Bottom depth is 27" and 18" at the top.
We burn hard wood and have had some pretty hot fires. We have a problem with the fireplace drawing properly. We've had it checked several times and the recommendation is to set the grate up on bricks as shown. I’m thinking we might just go ahead and raise the entire floor up with fire brick. We could hide the brick step up with a vent at the bottom.
We considered installing a woodstove but decided we primarily burn when company comes over so having the doors open to hear the sound of the fire is important. As I write this I think what we are trying to accomplish is controlling the airflow at the end of the burn to keep the smoke out of the house. Also provide a better seal to eliminate heat loss and down drafts scattering the ash when we are not burning. Will there be soot build up on the glass? Thanks
Our Comments: Raising the grate is not a bad idea, but can lead to issues with the airflow into the fire, which can cause the fire to smoke more as it dies out. The more common solution is to shrink the height of the opening using a smoke guard, which is a steel bar that runs across the top of the opening. We can make a glass door that has a built-in smoke guard, which is our best recommendation. Below is an example of how that looks.
Fireplace Opening: 44" W x 34 1/2" H
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
