Customer Comments: Fireplace tag is hard to read but was manufactured by Superior Fireplace Co. And looks like model 838 and number D-225939. Width of brick opening is 36" and height from hearth to top of opening is 20-3/4". I would like to install doors with at least some glass to see the fire but primarily increase the efficiency of the fireplace. Colors in the room are primarily gray so I think black trim would be best.
Our Comments: There are 2 options for installing doors on a prefab fireplace like yours where the brick has been applied over the black metal box. We can fit doors inside overlapping the top and bottom black metal that is showing leaving a small gap on the sides between the frame and the bricks. Doors that fit inside can be burned with the doors closed. There are also doors that can overlap the bricks, which must remain open when the fire is burning at a normal rate. Both types can be closed when starting the fire and when it is dying out. We will discuss this further over the phone.
Fireplace Opening: 36" W x 20 3/4" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Design Specialties Brookfield ZC Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. This is an inside fitting door that can be burned closed. Installation will be a slight challenge as the mounting hardware is not made for this particular application, so some ingenuity will be necessary.
Option #2: Hearth Creations Profile 2 ZC Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black. This door overlaps the brick opening and has wider gaps in the glass on the sides to allow airflow into the fireplace. You must burn this with the doors open. Installation is easy with pressure mount brackets.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Option #3: Design Specialties Carolina ZC Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Can be burned with the doors closed. Pressure mount brackets may or may not work because the black metal on the sides appears to be recessed behind the bricks. Some ingenuity may be needed to get the door installed.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
Option #4: Hearth Creations Iron Age 2 Fireplace Glass Door with Hammered Texture in Matte Black. This is an overlap fitting door with 1/4" spacers on the back of the frame and must be burned open. We have many different styles of doors that can be made this in a wide price range. Installation is easy with pressure mount brackets.
Inside Fit Closeup Bottom: This shows where the frame will overlap the bottom track of the metal fireplace 3/8 and leave a 1/8" minimum gap between the narrowest brick width. You must measure the width accurately to find the narrowest width between the bricks. We will then deduct 1/4" from that dimension (1/8" per side). The gap can be filled with mortar or high temperature silicone.
Inside Fit Closeup Top: This shows where the frame will overlap the top track of the metal fireplace 3/8" and leave a 1/8" minimum gap between the bricks.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
