Customer Comments: Hello, I saw your post from about a year ago on Houzz regarding having a stainless steel mantle that has ceramic insulation to protect the TV above the fireplace. My husband and I are interested in something along this line, except in white to match our white brick facade fireplace. It is painted Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-19). I'm not sure what options you have in terms of size and color. We do not intend to have a sound bar above the mantel. Currently, we are unable to use our gas fireplace because the TV above gets too hot. We just finished a complete renovation and were told the TV would not be impacted, but this is not the case.
Color of desired mantel: Although not indicated as an option - is it possible to do White Matte for additional cost? Would like to match the painted brick and bookshelves, which are Benjamin Moore OC-19, "White Dove". If white is impossible, second choice is matte black.
Goal: On Picture #1, I have drawn a pink line where I would like the mantel to be located at the same level as the first bookshelf, with the same profile as the bookshelves (as close as possible). There may be minimum requirements for the mantel, in terms of size, to be effective. If so, please let me know so I can evaluate how that would look in our space.
Questions: what is approx weight of the mantel, with and without the "insulation"? This will be helpful for the contractors who will install it.
Our Comments: The manufacturer recommends the steel shelves to be at least 12" above the opening to minimize potential discoloration from heat. We have created several mockups showing the shelf at different heights and thickness. 8" deep is the minimum we would suggest for heat protection, although we highly recommend 10" in cases like yours where there is a lot of heat. The shelf with insulation is rather light, probably between 30 to 40 lb at the most. It is easy for one person to handle and install. You will need the insulation, otherwise the shelf will do little good as the heat will transfer right through the shelf.
Fireplace Dimensions:
Fireplace Opening: 48" W x 14" H
Overall Width of Brick Wall: ~80"
Width of desired mantel: 68" wide
Height of Desired mantel: 3" tall
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
