Screens and Doors for Stacked Stone Fireplace Raised in the Wall - Project #20033

Customer Comments: Hello! We have a stone fireplace with a smaller opening that we'd like to create a black screen for since doors don't seem to be an option due to the smaller opening and uneven surface of the stone on the exterior. We've been unable to find a screen small enough to fit. The opening measures 34" wide by 29" high, with the height increasing a little about an inch or two into the fireplace. The width decreases the further in that the fireplace goes, since it's angled.

Our Comments: We have included mockups of the various types of screens that can be made for your fireplace. Actually, glass doors are the most common choice for a stacked stone fireplace raised in the wall. We make the frame about 1/4" smaller in width than the smallest width and height. Once installed, you fill the gaps with mortar and it looks great. Almost all of the glass doors you see on our site can be made to fit.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

It appears that the fireplace drops down an inch or two at the bottom, so the screen would need to be made a little short at the top so you can easily get it in and out.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
