Custom Arched Screens with Doors for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #20048

Customer Comments: The FP opening is 34" wide at the bottom, the sides are 24" and the top of the arch is 29". The arch is made of iron. Looking for a frame with hinged "screen" doors. It is an outside fireplace.

Our Comments: Here are some examples of outdoor fireplace screen doors made from materials designed to handle the elements. We have chosen stainless steel and zinc coated wrought iron for these applications. Stainless steel is the least expensive and is quite durable but can only be made in very basic styles. Zinc coated wrought iron is very expensive because it is hand crafted by a skilled blacksmith, but the details are quite attractive.

Attached Screen Door

These doors are made to inside the fireplace opening and are attached, so they are completely stable. Some of the stones will need to be chiseled for a proper fit. The gaps between the frame and the stones would be filled with mortar after the door is installed. Any of the above doors can be made this way.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
