Customer Comments: Remodeling fireplace. Adding mantel surround with overmantel, TV and built-ins with Granite Surround and Hearth. Need glass doors.
Our Comments: Here are mockups for the two types of glass doors we discussed over the phone. These can be added after the granite is done.
Fireplace Opening: Unknown
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable. This door would be made to the size of the fireplace opening.
This example shows the granite floated out about 2" around the opening down to the hearth with a filler piece of granite at the bottom between the hearth and the opening (see Fig. 1 below). The glass door frame would then overlap the floated granite to help change the proportion of the fireplace.
We can make a metal surround and hearth to cover the black metal that stands out about 3" from the wall. You would then paint the inside of the fireplace black, add the mantel and glass doors as shown below. The metal comes in a variety of smooth or textured black finishes which look great, or you can cover it with granite. In this case, we are using a solid brass glass door in an antique finish. The contrasting finish helps accentuate the modified proportion of the fireplce opening creating a more traditional look.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
