Trim for Zero Clearance Fireplace - Project #20084

Customer Comments: Looking for an overlay (magnetic?) that can go between the black prefab firebox and the drywall. Do not want to use tile or have a mantel.

Our Comments: We are not sure if you just want a trim piece to hide the joint between the firelace and the drywall, or if you want a fireplace door that has a full surround trim that covers the entire black metal portion of the fireplace up to the drywall. Here are examples of both concepts for clarification. Once we know which treatment you are looking for, we can present other options.

Trim & Surrounds

Trims like these can be made from 3/16" thick solid flat material that is attached with construction adhesive. If you want magnets, the material needs to be 3/4" deep with returns on the outer and inner sides to accommodate the thickness of the magnets. This can add a significant cost to the trim depending on the material.

Retrim Glass Doors

Glass doors can be made to overlap the entire black metal fireplace and overlap the drywall, or fit just inside the drywall. These doors must be 3/4" deep regardless and have spacers around the perimeter that allow airflow into the fireplace, so adding magnets is not a significant upgrade.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
