Customer Comments: I've attached two photos. It is a dual sided, outdoor, wood burning masonry fire place that currently has gas burner and steel logs. I would like a quote on sliding doors for both sides in black metal frames and whatever clear glass type is best. I will alway have one side of the doors open. The burner is match lit. We may change it to wood burning in the future.
Our Comments: It is never recommended to burn a 2 sided fireplace with just one side open as all of the flames are blown towards the side that is closed, which will create more heat than most glass doors can handle. You should burn with both sides open or both sides closed. You should also check with the gas log manufacturer to see if they allow the doors to be closed when the logs are burning as most gas logs are not allowed to be burned that way for safety reasons. If you must burn with one door closed, you will need special pyro-ceramic glass. Here are some options:
Fireplace Opening: 40" W x 29 3/4" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Tempered glass can handle prolonged heat from about 400 to 500 degrees f. These doors should be burned with both doors open or both doors closed.
Pyro Ceramic glass can handle prolonged temperatures up to 1200 degrees and also handles thermal shock better than tempered glass, which means starting the fire on a cold day is less likely to break the glass. Ceramic glass has rough edges that cannot be smoothed, so each pane must be framed.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
