Customer Comments: There is no damper in the gas log fireplace. I keep some cardboard wedged in place when not in use which is 99% of the time. I was told I could not have damper installed due to code. I woud like to know if custom glass doors would do the trick and keep heat/AC from going up the chimney. I was thinking of something to match our black iron railings on the stairs. We have new furniture (covered due to old pet) and a new rug on the way, more contemporary and much lighter. Thanks.
Our Comments: Glass doors will certainly solve your problem and are always recommended when adding gas logs. Here are a few examples.
Fireplace Opening: 28 7/8" W to 29 3/8" W x 31 3/4" H. Keystone sticks out 1/8" at bottom to 1/4" at top.

These doors are laser cut from 3/16" thick solid steel.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Flat Steel Arched Fireplace Glass Door in Matte Black with Gray Glass.
Option #1B Design Specialties Flat Steel Arched Surround with Stiletto Aluminum Glass Door in Rustic Black with Clear Glass. This is the least expensive alternative.
Option #2A: Hearth Creations Flat Steel Arched Fireplace Glass Door with Scroll Pattern in Graphite with Gray Glass.
Option #2B Hearth Creations Flat Steel Arched Fireplace Glass Door with Bannister Pattern in Matte Black with Clear Glass.
These doors are hand forged by a skilled blacksmith from 3/8" thick wrought iron. Very rugged looking with forged details and texture you cannot get with steel. Very high end.
Option #3: Stone Manufacturing WI-DF2G Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Door with Wide Frame in Flat Black with Gray Glass.
Option #4: Stone Manufacturing WI-DF2G Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Door with Leaf Scroll, Wide Frame and Outer Trim in Rust with Gray Glass.
Option #5: Stone Manufacturing WI-DF2G Wrought Iron Arched Fireplace Door with Wide Frame and Outer Trim in Roman Bronze with Gray Glass.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

Picture #1: With your camera sideways, take a picture directly in front of the fireplace from far enough away to see the entire fireplace floor to ceiling like this.

 Picture #2: With your back to the fireplace, take a picture looking straight out into the room so we can see the decor directly in front of the fireplace.

Please remove all objects from in front of the fireplace opening before you take your pictures (existing screen, plants or anything else). If you have an existing glass door, take pictures with the doors open and closed.
Once I recieve your pictures, I will create several mockups and post them to a project page and send you a link to view and them with others for their input. I will follow up with you to discus your project, quote prices and help you choose the treatment that suits you best.
