Customer Comments: Needing to figure out what type of fireplace door options are applicable with our configuration.
Our Comments: The door frame needs to be made to fit inside the narrowest stones. The gaps between the frame and stones will need to be filled with mortar. I have done many installations like this and can walk you through it if you wish to do it yourself.
Burning with Doors Closed: Not all glass doors can be burned with the doors closed. Doors with tempered glass that are allowed to be burned closed can handle constant temperatures of about 500F and should have at least 8" from the glass to the fire to prevent breakage. Doors with Pyro Ceramic glass can handle temps around 1200F and can have the fire withing 3" of the glass. Ceramic glass is very expensive, so you may consider buying those doors with tempered glass and burning with the doors open. Doors that must be burned open can be closed when starting a fire and when the fire is dying out, but not when it is burning strong.
Fireplace Opening: Unknown
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable. Made with tempered glass that can be burned closed.
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut. Made with tempered glass that can be burned closed.
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details. Made with tempered glass that can be burned closed.
These doors can be made with Tempered Glass or Pyro Ceramic Glass. They can be burned closed if purchased with Pyro Ceramic Glass, but must remain open with tempered glass.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
