Customer Comments: 69" wide x 39 1/4" high. I would like glass bi-fold doors to span the width, but leave approximately 12" gap on bottom or top of glass to allow draft. Steel beam over top, granite base.
Our Comments: You will need 12" of open space to get air to the fire. Most of our doors are avialable with a bottom draft with a small slot that is sufficient to feed air to the fire. Any more than about 3” to 4” of space at the bottom is too much and will cause overfiring. Also, you need the air to come in from the bottom of the fire, otherwise it won't draft properly.
Outdoor Fireplace Doors: Doors for outdoor fireplaces need to be made from stainless steel, aluminum, solid brass or zinc coated wrought iron. For this project, you need doors that can be burned closed, which will be stainless steel or aluminum. Stainless steel is the best for larger fireplaces because the aluminum doors do not have stainless steel bifold hinges. If you go with the aluminum doors, you can expect to replace the bifold hinges every year or two. We can provide extra hinges you can keep stored for this purpose.
Glass Size: Fireplace doors that can be burned closed cannot have glass panes larger than 4 sq. ft. Because your firelace is so large, it will require either fixed end panels as shown in Options #1 and #2, or shorter glass as in Option #3.
Fireplace Opening: 69" W x 39 1/4" H
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable. For larger fireplaces, they do not make the bifold hinges in stainless steel, so they will need to be replaced periodically in outdoor applications.
Stainless steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged as they are laser cut from solid 3/16" thick stainless steel. All of the components are stainless steel, including the bifold hinges.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
