Customer Comments: Greg, it was great to talk to you this afternoon. I am attaching the photos for my 2 fireplaces. I would like to keep the costs as modest as I reasonably can without making the doors look cheap and flimsy. We live in New Rochelle, NY, in case that makes any difference in the products you would choose. I think I want to do doors with outside trim, not the ones that insert into the opening. It is my understanding that the ones that insert into the opening are more expensive, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
For this fireplace (Living Room): Trim on outside of opening, Iid like to keep it at less than 2 inches.
Our Comments: Whether the door fits inside or overlaps the opening does not affect the price. Inside fitting doors can have a narrower profile since the frame does not need to overlap the opening. When designing a door to fit inside, we leave a 1/4" gap on the top and each side, which must be filled with mortar. On this firelace, you would then paint the mortar. So the installation is a bit more difficult fitting doors inside, but the doors seal better and the finished look may be more appealing.
Fireplace Opening: 59 7/8" W x 28 5/8" H?
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
These doors are made using a heavier gauge aluminum than the ones above. They are a little more expensive, but feel sturdier and have a nicer finish if you prefer a brushed nickel. The only downside is, they cannot be made more than 60" wide, so your only choice would be to do them as an inside fit.
These doors are made using 3/16" thick solid stainless steel that is laser cut. The frame with can be as narrow as 1 1/4" for an inside fit and 1 1/2" for an overlap fit, depending on the lintel thickness. If you are close to the ocean, stainless steel is a better choice due to the salt air. The same look is also available in normal steel with a satin nickel overlay or just plain black in either stainless steel or normal steel.
High End Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are very unique with a minimal appearance. The two outer panes of glass are fixed, while the inner panes slide left and right to open and close. These doors are best suited for large fireplaces with gas logs. Frame will be 2" to 2 1/2" wide depending on the lintel thickness. Nickel and Chrome finishes are made using solid brass for an extremely durable long-lasting finish that never needs to be polished.
