Customer Comments: The fireplace is open to the outside from a screened in porch
Our Comments: We recommend stainless steel doors with Pyro Ceramic glass for this application. They are quite expensive, but the only product that is designed to handle the elements and allow you to burn a fire with one side closed and the other open, both sides open or both sides closed. Less expensive alternatives are not ideal and must be burned with both sides open. Please read the details below for each type of door.
Fireplace Opening: " W x " H
Aluminum doors are the least expensive alternative. They are a good choice for outdoor applications because aluminum does not rust like steel. The downside is, you must burn fires with both sides open.
Stainless steel is a more heavy duty material for outdoor applications and is substantially more costly than aluminum. These doors must also be burned with the doors open on both sides.
Recommended: This is the proper solution for an indoor/outdoor see through fireplace. Pyro ceramic glass can handle thermal shock much better than tempered glass, which means when it is cold outside, the glass will change temperatures quickly. Ceramic glass can also handle higher sustained temperatures up to 1200F degrees, where tempered glass can only handle about 400F to 500F. These characteristics allow you to burn a fire with one side open, both sides open or both sides closed. Ceramic glass has rough edges and each pane must be fully framed.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
