Doors to Block Off One Side of See Through Fireplace - Project #20248

Customer Comments: We have a through outdoor fireplace. I want to be able to close the back end (48"W x 39"H). I'm think two options. One is two hinged doors in a frame that gets mounted to the outside. Another option is to simply place a stand alone panel in the opening that we can place/remove as we want to. Thoughts on design/pricing/timing?

Our Comments: Outdoor see through fireplaces always have issues with wind blowing throught the fireplace, so it is not uncommon to want one side blocked off. The best solution is to add ceramic glass doors to both sides so you can burn fires with one or both sides open or closed. This is a very expensive solution, particularly since you must have materials that can withstand the elements and thermal shock. We can use steel instead of ceramic glass, which is far less expensive, or add a free standing screen to block off one side as you mentioned.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

A more affordable alternative is to use aluminum doors instead of stainless steel. Although these doors are made for indoors, they hold up well outdoors as aluminum does not rust. The hinges may need to be lubricated periodically and eventually replaced, but the price will be significantly less. We recommend operable doors on both sides of the firelace as this reduces the size of each glass pane, thus reducing the odds of breakage.

Pet Deterrent Channel

Pet Deterrent Channel

The Pet Deterrent Channel illustrated above helps prevent pets and small children from pushing the mesh inward and getting into the fireplace. This can be added to the F92 bottom bar, which also prevents logs from rolling out into the fireplace. When installing a bar and mesh, it is always a great idea to add the matching F92 bottom bar with the Pet Deterrent Channel.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
