Screen Options for Raised Hearth Fireplace with Overhanging Stone Header - Project #20268

Customer Comments: I need two more custom screens made. However, I am struggling on the screen design, because we do not have any stone between the mantle and the opening. See photo attached.

Our Comments: There are many options for a fireplace like yours. Here are a few to help you figure out what type of screen you may want.

Single Panel Screens

These can be made to overlap the stones on the sides and fit just under the ledge. They provide excellent spark protection, but must be moved out of the way when tending the fire.

Mesh Doors

Mesh doors are more functional because they do not have to be moved every time you tend the fire. They can be made free standing with legs or attached to the fireplace.

Glass Doors

Glass doors give you the ultimate spark protection and control of your fire. with mesh curtains or gate mesh backup doors behind the glass, you can burn the fire with the doors open or closed. This is a great benefit because it keeps the cold air out overnight after you build a fire since you normally have to leave the damper open.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
