Customer Comments: Greg, We have an outside see through wood fireplace. One side faces pool, the other a covered patio. It’s almost west to east with the west being the patio. I'm intereted in seeing what you'd recommend for the patio and even the pool side to keep ashes from blowing out. Imm open to suggestions? We got a bunch of smoke under our patio on its first use. It'll have to be large fires to keep that from happening. My other concern is piece of mind if I went in for the night.
Our Comments: See-Through outdoor fireplaces are a great idea conceptually, but never seem to be practical. The slightest breeze will cause smoke to blow through one side to the other, particuarly when the fire is first starting and when it is dying out. The only cure I am aware of is to add glass or metal doors to both sides of the fireplace. Ideally, you would want doors where you can burn a fire with one or both sides open or closed. Glass doors with tempered glass must be burned with either both doors open or both doors closed. If you want to be able to burn with just one side closed, you must have ceramic glass, which is very expensive. Here are options representing both types.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Design Specialties Stiletto Outdoor Fireplace Cabinet Glass Door in Rustic Black with Mesh Curtains.
Option #2: PW Breckinridge Aluminum Fireplace Glass Door in Satin Black with Mesh Curtains. Can be made with ceramic glass, but is not ideal for outdoors since the hinges are not stainless steel.
Stainless steel is one of the best materials for outdoor applications as it can better handle the elements. If made with ceramic glass, you can burn fires with one side open and the other closed, or both sides open or closed. These doors require framed door panels when ceramic glass is used.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Cabinet Door with Ceramic Glass and Mesh Curtains in Matte Black.
Option #4: Hearth Creations Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Bifold Door with Ceramic Glass and Mesh Curtains in Matte Black.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
