Aluminum and Stainless Steel Glass Doors for Outdoor Brick Fireplce - Project #20330

Customer Comments: Need glass doors for my fireplace with a screen. Would like it to be steel black finish.

Our Comments: We do not recommend plain steel for outdoor applications as it will rust. Appropriate materials to withstand the elements would be: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Solid Brass or Zinc Coated Wrought Iron. The latter two are very expensive, so we have not included them at this point. Each of the stainless steel options can also be made in normal steel, but you can expect them to rust.

Ceramic Glass for Outdoors

We highly recommend ceramic glass for outdoor fireplace because it can handle thermal shock much better than tempered glass. Thermal shock occurs when it is cold outside and you build a fire. The temperature inside the fireplace is dramatically different than outside. Tempered glass can easily break if you are not careful to allow the doors to warm up before you close them. Ceramic glass must be fully frame when added to the stainless steel doors below.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Stainless Steel

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
