Custom Fireplace Glass Doors - Project #20408

Customer Comments: 2 See-Through fireplaces. I need solid attachments for all 4 sides (2 inside and 2 outside), GLASS doors that I can open while fire is burning on whatever side we are sitting at,(not sure if 2 solid glass doors or 2 "bifold" glass doors for each side??) and keep the other side CLOSED so no draft comes through and throws off the up draft through chimney I would like something as simple looking as I already have in the picture.....but obviously GLASS and something I can attach to the stone and bottom of the fireplace, black framing not too bulky and would like to keep the ARCH. The 2 outside I would like the same look but need to be outside dorable. One side outside is undercover and the other side is "semi undercover" but they still will both be hit with outside elements at some point. Thank you!

Our Comments: The stone is rather flat, so you can have the doors made to fit on the outside or inside. Doors fitting outside will need a wider frame to accomodate the smallest and largest dimensions between the stones. Doors fitting inside can be made with a narrower frame, but the gap between the stone and frame will need to be filled with mortar.

In order to burn fires with one side open and one side closed, you MUST use ceramic glass, which is somewhat expensive. Most manufacturers require the ceramic glass to be fully framed because their ceramic glass has rough edges. One company can make ceramic glass with smooth edges, so they can provide doors with a full view of the fire. However, that company does not make doors specifically for outdoor applications, so they will require more maintenance. We will discuss this further.

Fullview Wrought Iron

These doors are hand forged by a blacksmith and can be made with fullview cabinet or bifold doors with ceramic glass. Although they are not specifically made for outdoors, they hold up well in a black powder coat finish, pretty much like a wrought iron fence. The hinges and latches will need to be lubricated periodically.

Fullview Steel

These doors are made from regular steel. For outdoor applications, a zinc primer with a powder coat finish is used to fight rust. The hinges and latches will need to be lubricated periodically. This is not a perfect solution for outdoor fireplaces, but they are quite a bit less expensive than stainless steel and give you a fullview of the fire.

Framed Stainless Steel

These doors are made from regular steel for indoors and stainless steel for outdoors. Stainless steel with a black powder coat finish is the best material for outdoor fireplaces when using ceramic glass. This manufacturer uses framed ceramic glass panels, they do not offer a fullview option.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
