Customer Comments: Looking for pocket door.
Our Comments: Below are the two pocket doors we discussed over the phone along with an outside mount sliding door and a bifolding door.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8” from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 61" W x 30" H
This door is specifically designed as a pocket door for new construction or remodels where a new facing will be applied to the fireplace. The pocket is 3 1/4" deep and 6" taller at the top then the opening. The doors hang inside on a rail with pullies. Each door is framed with 1 1/4" wide wrought iron. This can be made with ceramic glass for burning with the doors closed.
This door is made by Stone Manufacturing and Hand Crafted from solid brass. Although not specifically designed as a pocket door, it can be installed like one. The frame is just 1 1/4" deep, using an angle iron with a solid brass channel attached to the top and bottom. The pair of 3/8" thick glass panels have no frame, just handles, and slide in the bottom channel that is lubricated with graphite on solid brass. This mechanism is not encased, so installation requires a bit of planning and ingenuity. This door must be burned with the glass open.
Made by Design Specialties, the rail door has framed glass panels that slide on a rail to open and close. Due to the size of the fireplace, there would be two 1/4" tempered glass panes on each side to allow burning fires with the doors closed.
There are many different overlap fitting bifold doors. The door below has a very flat 3/16" solid steel frame, shown with the doors open and closed.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
