Stainless Steel Arched Fireplace Doors for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #20468

Customer Comments: Outdoor fireplace. Want a flat screen permanently attached with doors. Stainless painted black. Same as Project #11293 on your website.

Our Comments: Below are mockups showing doors made from various materials that are designed for use outdoors. Each material has it's benefits and limitations, so please read the details. These can be made with mesh doors, or glass doors with mesh backup doors. Glass doors that can be closed when buring fires are highly recommended for outdoor fireplaces to prevent smoke and ashes from blowing out of the fireplace when it is windy.

Solid Brass Painted Black: Mesh Doors and Glass made from Solid Brass doors have solid brass hinges and latches with some stainles steel components such as mesh and other hardware. Solid brass will outlast stainless steel in the long run, but when made with glass doors, the doors must be burned open.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8” from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. Ceramic glass can also handle rapid temperature changes better than tempered glass, so it is less likely to shatter when it is cold when you light a fire. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.

Stainless Steel

These doors have all stainless components, including latches and hinges, which are great for use outdoors. They can be made mesh doors, glass doors with mesh backup doors. If you add ceramic glass, you can burn fires with the glass doors closed, which is helps prevent smoke and embers from blowing out of the fireplace when it gets windy. Bifold glass doors are also available, but each panel must be fully framed when using ceramic glass.

Solid Brass

Solid Brass is one of the most durable of all the outdoor materials and is highly recommended for salt air locations as it does not rust. Latches and hinges are all solid brass. Other components, such as mesh and screws are stainless steel. Ceramic glass is not available with these doors, so you cannot burn them with the glass doors closed.

Clear Coated Wrought Iron

These doors are not built from ground up to be used outdoors. This is an attempt to make a door made for indoors more durable outdoors. The clear-coating does a good job on the wrought iron, but other components, such as hinges and latches are made from steel, so they must be lubricated periodically to avoid rust. The wire mesh may start to rust over the years, but it can be easily replaced. A major benefit is the ability to have full-view ceramic glass doors, which is not available from other manufacturers. These doors are also the least expensive when it comes to ceramic glass, so overall, we believe they are a great choice.

Zinc Coated Wrought Iron

Zinc coated wrought iron is one of the most durable outdoor materials. It is also the most expensive, as these doors are hand forged by a skilled blacksmith. They are heavy duty and rugged. The downside is, they are not available with ceramic glass, so if you want glass doors, you cannot burn these with the doors closed. For mesh doors, they are the best you can buy.

Less Expensive Alternatives

Glass Doors and Screen Doors for outdoor fireplaces are rather expensive due to the materials required to withstand the elements. Here are some alternatives that you may wish to consider if the above options are outside the budget. These can be made from stainless steel and left outdoors. They can also be made from normal steel and stored in the garage to help reduce rust.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
