Customer Comments: Hi, We have an outdoor isokern firebox. Out house is up on the mountains, and we get some wind gusts that go across the front, causing smoke to come into the living area. It's outside, so not unlivable, but not ideal. I am wondering about glass doors and whether they might baffle wind and help with this.
Our Comments: Unfortunately, glass doors are not a viable solution for your fireplace. Isokern specifically warns not to burn fires with glass doors closed (see label below). Instead, I recommend adding perforated mesh doors to help reduce the smoke problem. The perforated mesh is roughly 40% to 50% open and will block some of the wind, so although they cannot eliminated the issue, they will help. Plus, you can enjoy the added spark protection.
Fireplace Opening: Unknown
These doors are made from stanless steel with stainless steel performated mesh that with a powder coat finish that is durable outdoors. There are two types of doors with a significant difference in price. The first (less expensive) is made from formed stainless sheet metal, which has seems at the joints. The second (more expensive) is made from laser cut stainless steel and has no seems. Both use the same type of perforated mesh which helps block wind to a degree.
The label for the Isokern fireplace clearly states it has not been tested for use with glass doors and if they are added, they must be burned open. Burning a fire with glass doors closed could potentially overheat the framing used to install your fireplace and potential catch fire.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
