Customer Comments: Hi Greg. Very large opening. Does not have to cover the entire area. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I really like your design (Option #1) with the ability to open without moving the screen but yet the curve really projects. Would also love to see other ideas! I've always had the bronze but would like to see it in brass and any other finishes you have. Keep the pictures coming..love it!
Our Comments: I have included a variety of options. The most convenient are those that do not have to be moved when tending the fire. The glass doors are the ultimate treatment because you can close them when the fire is dying out and keep the warm air inside. If you choose ceramic glass, you can close them while the fire is burning if needed.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8” from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 58" W x 43 1/2" H (Center) x 33 1/2" H (Sides)
This is my own original concept I recently designed specifically for large firelaces. It stands out about 8" with bowed sides that have wire mesh and sliding mesh curtains in the center. The mockup is a prototype, the actual screen has yet to be made.
Bowed screens stand on their own and set out about 8" in the center to zero on the sides and must be moved out of the way when tending the fire.
Single panel screens are very popular and can be custom made to fit the arch. They must be moved whenever tending the fire.
Although these doors are free standing, they will come with hardware that allows you to mount them to the fireplace, which is necessary for screens this size. These are more convenient because you just open the doors to tend the fire.
Attached doors are the most convenient and secure type of screen for large fireplaces like this. These can be made with just wire mesh doors, or glass doors with mesh backup doors. Glass doors can be burned closed if made with ceramic glass.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
