Customer Comments: Looking for a suggestion on what to put on my fireplace. The opening is 29 X 18 1/2
Our Comments: Here are various types of screens that can be used for a fireplace like yours. Please read the comments about each type of screen. Once you have decided which type you prefer, we can narrow down the style options. The fireplace opening itself is somewhat small and disproportioned for the TV and surrounding stone. I suggest a screen or door made larger than the opening to improve the visual proportion.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8” from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 29" W x 18 1/2" H
Glass doors help reduce heat loss in your home. When you build a fire in the evening, normally you must leave the damper open all night. Closing the doors when the fire is dying out dramatically reduces the amount heated air that goes up your chimney, or cold air that comes down. Glass doors with ceramic glass can be burned with the doors close for additional safety and efficiency. These can be made with wider frames to inprove the proportions of the fireplace, or with a narrow frame to fit inside with mortar filling the gap.
Mesh doors are a great functional alternative. They can be made attached to the fireplace just like glass doors, or in a free standing version that does not require installaton. These can be made with wider frames to help with the proportions of the fireplace.
Free standing screens can be custom made to fit the size of the opening or larger to help with proportions. These are less convenient as they must be moved out of the way and set aside on the floor when tending the fire. Othewise, they provide excellent spark protection and fire viewing.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
