Customer Comments: 31H x 36W. The width is measured from the bricks on the inside of the firebox. Stones do cover some of the opening, so narrower than measured from left brick wall to right brick wall. Elevated firebox. We are do NOT want glass. We do prefer a screen of some sort that is rust proof. Not sure how to mount the screen. The fireplace is OUTSIDE. The decor is Adirondack. Looking for simple but durable.
Our Comments: The extreme rough shape of the stone and lack of hearth create a challenge for most firelace screens. I have come up with 3 options that will work. Please read the details about each option below. To determine if these options will work, I will need to see some additional pictures from inside the fireplace so I can see the back side of the stones on the sides and top.
Fireplace Opening: 36" W x 31" H
Mesh curtains have a header bar that runs across the top of the opening. They can also have a bottom bar that helps prevent logs from rolling out of the fireplace. For outdoor applications, the bars and mesh curtans are made from stainless steel with a black poweder coat.
We can make a heavy duty wrought iron mesh door with a frame that is scribed to the stone. The door will only fit as well as the template and creating an accurate template can be a challenge. We normally make the door 1/4" smaller than the template on the top and sides and the gaps need to be filled with mortar. This is the least recommended alternative unless you feel confident you can make a good template.
The frame is made in pieces that are bolted together allowing you to install the door behind the stones. Elongated hinges are available to bring the doors out beyond the stones, but are not necessary with mesh doors, although recommended for glass doors. This is our most recommended option.
The detachable frame comes in several pieces that are bolted together. This allows you to install a door behind the facing and is particularly useful with very irregular stone. This can also be made with offset hinges that extend beyond the stone allowing the doors to open all the way flat against the stone and avoiding hitting the frame on the stone edges.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
