Customer Comments: Hi Greg, I was trying to find a decorative screen because the FP already has a screen with a pull chain. The opening is so large and I haven't been able to find one already constructed. The opening is 51-1/2" wide by 39" tall (42" from the floor to the top of the opening)
Our Comments: Below are some great options for screens that can be made to fit your beautiful fireplace. I have included bowed screens and screens with doors that are attached to the fireplace. Flat single panel fireplace sreens have rear legs that will cause them to stand about 5" away from the fireplace due to the 3" lip at the bottom, so I have not included such options.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Fireplace Opening: 51 1/2" W x 39" H (Raised 3")
These bowed screens do not require legs and will stand on their own, making them ideal for fireplaces with a lip at the bottom.
Screen doors that are attached to the fireplace are convenient as they do not have to be moved out of the way every time you tend the fire.
Option #4: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Fireplace Door with Scroll Detail in Burnished Buff Pewter with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Glass doors are the ultimate treatment for convenience and efficiency. You can close the doors as the fire starts to die out without worries about cold air coming into the home all night with the damper left open. Doors with ceramic glass can be burned closed in cases where you want 100% spark protection or just need a bit less heat.
Option #5: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Fireplace Door in Burnished Dark Matte Bronze with Tempered or Ceramic Glass.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
