Glass Doors for Outdoor Fireplace - Project #21022

Customer Comments: I am looking for a bi-fold ceramic glass fireplace door for an outdoor custom built wood burning fireplace. The fireplace does not have any gas running to it. I want the door to be inset. Client may burn wood with doors open and doors closed. I've attached a picture of it (photo #1). The open dimension measures 35" W x 19.75 H. The entire fireplace is 6' W x 10' H. I do not have a picture facing out from the fireplace. There are two chairs and one sofa about 8' away.

Our Comments: Bifold doors with ceramic glass in stainless steel require each glass pane to be fully framed. Doors made from zinc coated wrought iron can be made without frames around the glass. Zinc coated wrought iron is about 85% as durable outdoors than stainless steel, but many people wrought iron when buying doors with ceramic glass because they provide an unobstructed view of the fire.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is the most durable material for outdoor fireplaces. When made with ceramic glass, each glas pane must be fully framed. This is a limitation of the manufacturer due to the glass they use, which does not have a clean edge.

High End Zinc Coated Wrought Iron

Hand forged by a blacksmith from heavy duty 1/4" thick zinc coated wrought iron with gasketed doors for a tighter seal. These doors have about 85% rust protection compared to stainless steel, but can be made with unframed ceramic glass doors, offering a fullview of the fire. The shear heavy duty thickness of the wrought iron with the zinc coateing make these doors very suitable for use outdoors, but you will need to lubricate the hinges periodically to keep them operating smoothly.

Low End Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is the least expensive material for outdoors and holds up well like most aluminum outdoor furniture. These can be made with fullview ceramic glass. The hinges and other harware are steel and may need to be lubricated periodically or replaced.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
