Customer Comments: We are looking for a wrought iron fireplace screen with substantial doors This fireplace is used extensively and the screen needs to be user friendly.
Our Comments: The most heavy duty doors will in fact be made from zinc coated wrought iron. Due to the high cost of rust resistent outdoor materials, these doors can become very expensive. With that in mind, I have included alternatives that are not as heavy duty to extend the price range of options from low to high end. Some of these options can also have ceramic glass with mesh backup doors, which allows you to continue burning the fire when it gets windy without smoke and ashes blowing about.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Outdoor Fireplace Materials: Materials designed specifically for outdoor fireplaces will be stainless steel or zinc coated wrought iron. Both of these can be very expensive. Many of my customers seek a balance between price and durability. For example, aluminum holds up well outdoors, but some of the hardware and hinges will eventually rust. Some manufacturers offer an expensive outdoor option that includes stainless steel hardware to overcome this issue, while others may not. Zinc coated wrought iron holds up well, but the gate mesh or mesh curtains get very expensive in stainless steel and some people will choose normal steel for those components and replace them periodicallly. I will provide pricing for various options so you can find the right balance.

Free standing screens with doors are the least expensive alternative. This screen is made from stainless steel painted black. For larger fireplaces, the screen will be unstable and fall over when you open the doors. Clamps are included that allow you to attach it to the fireplace inside to prevent this from happening. This screen does not have "Substantial Doors" as you requested, but the price may be more appealing that some of the sturdier options.
Option #1: Hearth Creations Free Standing Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Screen with Doors in Black.
This is the least expensive stainless steel door that is attached to the fireplace. It is made from formed stainless steel sheet metal with pin hinges, which is not as heavy duty as the solid stainless steel or wrought iron, but it is durable and may be in a better price range. These are attached to the fireplace with pressure screws and are sturdier than the free standing screens.
Option #2: Hearth Creations Formed Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Mesh Door in Black.
This stainless steel door is made from 3/16" thick solid stainless steel with heavier hinges and is attached with pressure screws, or can be bolted to the firebricks inside the fireplace with masonry sinkers for a solid installation. Overall, it is much sturdier than the light weight stainless steel option.
Option #3: Hearth Creations Heavy Duty Solid Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Mesh Door in Black. Can also be made with ceramic glass with gate mesh backup doors.
These doors are hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron that is zinc coated for durability outdoors. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. These doors are commonly ordered with ceramic glass for buring fires with the doors closed.
Option #4: Hand Crafted Luxe Inside Fit Heavy Duty Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Fireplace Door in Hammered Black with Contemporary Handles. Can also be made with Ceramic Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Option #5: Hand Crafted Heavy Duty Zinc Coated Wrought Iron Fireplace Door in Burnished Black with Twist Handles. Can also be made with Ceramic Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Option #6: Hand Crafted Heavy Duty Zinc Coated Mission Style Wrought Iron Bifold Ceramic Glass Fireplace Door in Distressed Black with Woven Wire Handles. Can also be made with mesh doors instead of glass.
If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
