Customer Comments: Hello, The opening is approximately 48 inches wide, 21.5 inches high, with a 14.5-inch-deep open side return. I've attached three photos, including one annotated with the rough dimensions. Could you quote a custom L-shaped screen that covers both exposed sides? Because there is a baby in the home, stability matters. We would prefer a design that is securely mounted or otherwise difficult to tip or move, while still allowing practical access to the fire.
Our Comments: Below are examples of corner fireplace doors that are attached to the fireplace. These are the most practical and safest protectio for small children. Two of the examples can be made with child safety latches or keyed locks for extra security.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass.

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
Option #3: Design Specialties Legend Fireplace Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Forged Iron with Clear Tempered Glass and Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Includes Keyed Safety Locks.
Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. These doors are most commonly ordered with ceramic glass for burning fires with the doors closed.
Option #4: Hand Crafted Wrought Iron Gasket Sealed Corner Fireplace Glass Door in Burnished Black with Tempered or Ceramic Glass and Heavy Duty Gate Mesh Backup Doors.
Child Safety Clips: These clips make it difficult for a child to open glass doors. You must depress the clip with one hand while pulling on the door with the other. They can be added to any Design Specialties aluminum door.
Keyed Locks: These are locks that are at the bottom of the fireplace doors that require a key to open the door. This is the ultimate protection for pets and children and a great idea for hospitality applications or rentals where you do not want the tennant to have access to the fireplace. Locks are available on a few choice Design Specialties and Hearth Creations doors.

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
