Customer Comments: Outdoor mesh with doors Coastal, salt water. 29.5 tall 33.5 wide approx 16” deep
Our Comments: For outdoor coastal applications, I recommend aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum is not as rugged, but does hold up well in salt air. Stainless steel mesh doors are made from 304 stainless, which is not marine grade and can be expected to show signs of discoloration and rust, particularly in salt air (read disclaimer below). The ultimate material for salt air is 316 marine grade stainless steel, but it is only available for free standing screens as shown in Option #1.
Fireplace Opening: 33.5" W x 29.5" H
316 Marine Grade stainless steel is the best material to reduce rust in outdoor salt air applications. Although it can be powder coated, it holds up best in a natural satin stainless steel finish.
Option #1: 316 Marine Grage Stainless Steel Outdoor Single Panel Fireplace Screen in Satin Stainless Steel with 316 Stainless Steel Wire Mesh.
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as stainless steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.
Option #2: Design Specialties Aluminum Brookfield Outdoor Cabinet Mesh Fireplace Door with 304 Stainless Steel Hardware and Mesh in Black
These doors are laser cut from heavy duty 3/16" thick 304 stainless steel with Easy to Install Pressure Mount System (no drilling required). This door can be made in a natural satin stainless finish or can be powder coated. The first two incorporate stainless steel wire mesh, while the third option has a heavier gauge stainless steel perforated mesh (read more below).
Important Note: 304 stainless steel is a commonly used material for outdoors on items such as high-end barbecues. However, it is not considered marine grade and will show signs of discoloration and even rust over the years. Read disclaimer below
Option #3: Design Specialties 304 Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Door in Black Powder Coat with Black Stainless Wire Mesh.
Option #4: Design Specialties 304 Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Mesh Door in Classic Bronze Powder Coat with Black Stainless Wire Mesh.
Option #5: Hearth Creations 304 Stainless Steel Outdoor Fireplace Mesh Door in Vintage Iron Powder Coat with Heavy Duty Black Perforated Stainless Mesh.
304 stainless is the most common grade of stainless steel used in fabricated products. Stainless steel will tarnish and discolor if left outdoors. This is particularly true in environments close to the ocean or swimming pools. Not every component is made from stainless steel and some discoloration or corrosion can occur. Regular cleaning and oiling the moving parts will keep these doors operating as intended. If the product was ordered with the natural brushed surface, it is easily cleaned and brightened up with a non-woven abrasive like a Scotch Bright scouring pad.
Aluminum doors intended for outdoor use will have most components other than the outer frame and door frames made from stainless steel.
Wire mesh is most commonly used because it is easier to see through and does blocks less heat. Perforated mesh is very rigid and sturdy, but it is a bit harder to see through and tends to block more heat. I only recommend perforated mesh for larger fireplace screens that would otherwise require horizontal support bars when made with wire mesh. Horizontal support bars tend to change the look of a screen and obstruct the view of the fire, so they may be less desireable than perforated mesh.
Note: Hearth Creations outdoor fireplace screens made from 304 stainless steel are only available with perforated mesh.
