Doors for Mid-Century Modern Stone Fireplace - Project #21425

Customer Comments: Hello, We have a new addition with a fireplace that needs either a door or a screen. We haven't fully decorated the room, and the furniture hasn't arrived yet. We are trying to blend mid-century with rustic traditional. I sent a picture of our rug, vintage record player, and the couch we ordered. I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Our Comments: Having the fireplace raised in the wall with no hearth, I recommend glass doors or mesh doors. Any type of free standing screen will allow ashes and small sparks to fall to the floor behind the screen, which will leave soot and burn marks. For this reason, I did not include any free standing screens.

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures around 450F without shattering and should be at least 8" from the flames. This is sufficient for closing the doors as the fire starts to die out to keep the heat in the home. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures around 1450F with direct flame contact. If you want the ability to burn continuous fires with the doors closed, you need ceramic glass. You can close the tempered glass doors when the fire starts to die out to keep the warm air in during the night.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle relatively high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is not as heavy duty and rugged as steel or wrought iron, but it is the most affordable.

Medium to High-End Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Flat Steel

High End Hand Forged Wrought Iron Doors

Hand forged by a blacksmith from 1/4" thick solid wrought iron with heavy duty gasketed doors for a tighter seal and maximum draft reduction. Not only are these built to be used, they take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tasteful details. These doors are most commonly ordered with ceramic glass for burning fires with the doors closed. They can also be made as mesh doors without glass.

High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass

These mesh doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass with a unique Pseudo Clearview style that minimized the visual impact of the center frames. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. See Stone Manufacturing Trims and Finishes Here!

Mesh Door

Mesh Curtains

Mesh curtains are a very mid-century style treatment that is both functional and convenient to use. You can have them made with just the top bar, top and bottom bar, or a full framed screen. The bottom bar and fully framed versions help prevent logs and ashes from rolling out of the fireplace onto the hearth.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need gate mesh backup doors or mesh curtains behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.

Glass Options

Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.

Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
