Glass Doors for Large See Through White Brick Fireplace - Project #20425

Customer Comments: Hi Greg, I am a GC out in California. I found you on the web. I was hoping to get a quote for a new fireplace frame with glass doors. It is a double sided box with the same conditions each side, so we need 2 units. Simple matte black frame – similar to the picture on your website listed as Project #20421. No mesh curtains needed. Glass panels – you tell me the appropriate panel numbers needed per the opening size. Let me know if you need anything else from me. Also please let me know approx. lead times. Thank you for your help!

Our Comments: Below are some mockups, including the door featured on Project #20421, assuming you are referring to the Stiletto. I recommend using a door with a wider frame on this brick fireplace in order to hide the gaps in the mortar joints (see Fig. 1 at bottom of page). Each of the mockups below will provide a simple modern look. 4 glass panes are necessary for a fireplace this large, so either bifold or sliding doors will be needed. The sliding doors are quite unique and are great for see-through fireplaces with gas logs.

Fireplace Opening: 48" W x 26" H

Before
Before:

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Stiletto
Stiletto Fireplace Door Option #1: Design Specialties Stiletto Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Rustic Black. This door can only overlap the opening 1/2", which may not be enough to cover the mortar joints (see Fig. 1 below)

Medium Range Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

High End Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are quite unique. Ideal for a see through fireplace with gas logs where a sleek modern design is required.

Sliding Door
Solid Brass Fireplace Door Option #5: Stone Manufacturing SD Sliding Fireplace Door in Flat Black, shown with doors open. This door has 2 fixed panes of glass on the right and left sides and 2 sliding panes in the center.
Sliding Door
Rail Sliding Fireplace Door Option #6: Design Specialties Rail Sliding Door in Rustic Black. This door has a rail at the top where the doors hang, so the entire doors slide left and right to open and close. Shown with doors open.

Fig #1 - Closeup. The red line shows where the Stiletto would overlap the opening and barely cover the mortar joints. This may not be enough to block the holes when viewd from the side.

Glass Door Mesh Options

If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.

We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
